Madison Company Featured Product: U3M "Mini Probe"
Madison's featured product, the U3M "Mini Probe," is a non-contact, ultrasonic based level sensor that combines versatility and full programmability in an affordable and compact package. With no moving parts and no sensor shaft to be immersed into the liquid, the U3M can be field calibrated to measure tank levels from four inches to six feet in a single device, replacing longer, less portable float and mechanical sensors.
The U3M emits an ultrasonic pulse to the surface of the liquid which is reflected back to the sensor's receiver. The time of flight is divided by two and converted to a 4-20mA current output signal directly proportional to the fluid level. A simple single pushbutton calibration allows the user to set the 'empty' and 'full' positions in or out of the tank by fixing on a known "target' surface like a wall or floor. Optional RS485 communications software is available to interface with a personal computer or to network up to 128 sensors.
One typical application called for close level monitoring of a thick and slurried grease that was too viscous and sticky to work well with a conventional float transmitter. The U3M was easily field calibrated to the four foot deep tank and connected using the digital software to the maintenance office PC, where the grease level was displayed as a bar graph using the data logging software. The same device was also re-calibrated to be used as a temporary sensor in a smaller reserve tank, providing a continuous current signal to a inverter pump drive to regulate and control the speed of the pump as the level changed.
Another application used six U3Ms to "daisy chain" separate containers of beverage syrup to a central controller with the level status viewable on a single screen. In addition each probe was equipped with a integral 5 amp high-level relay for emergency alarm and shut-off function.
The U3M comes with a standard 1 inch NPT mount in a corrosion-resistant PVC housing rated for NEMA 4X (IP65). With an accuracy of ±0.25% of full range and a resolution of 0.040 inch, the U3M is widely recommended for use in food, pharmaceutical, fuel system and industrial process equipment.

"Configurate" Your Madison Product Instantly!
Do you ever need quick technical information for a custom sized tank level sensor? Or a budgetary price or availability for a particular material in a float switch or transmitter? Madison Company's "Product Configurator" provides a single, interactive source for technical information, price and availability on an unlimited selection of custom-built single and multi-level float switches, continuous electronic output float transmitters and graduated tape level indicators.
The Product Configurator is an easy-to-use tool for estimating and specifying all of Madison's vertical level controls. With a simple, two-step registration, this free service allows you to select mount size, mount and float material, dimensions to individual switch points or range of electronic output when configuring your custom product.

- Select material for the mount and stem from 316 stainless steel, brass, or plastic, as well as the desired float material.
- Select the number of floats and the distance to each float switch actuation, or full range and resolution for continuous electronic output based on the float movement.
- Select available options like "slosh shields" or junction boxes and continue to the quote page. All your selected options will be displayed along the way and the system will calculate overall stem dimensions, deadband, switch ratings and specifications.
- Hit "Quote" and the Product Configurator prints a fully detailed quotation document that includes small quantity pricing, all dimensions, material construction, ratings and agency approvals.
The Madison Product Configurator generates a complete "point of sale" bill of material and manufacturing worksheet that is delivered directly to production. Any customized multi-level switch can normally be built and shipped within four working days. The lead time on continuous output level transmitters is typically within ten working days of order. (Lead times can vary with production scheduling. The quote form is regularly updated to reflect current manufacturing lead times).
